Living the Life - J.F. Policky

by Jo Auburne

Living in the ranching environment, experiencing western life first hand gives J.F. Policky’s paintings an earthiness and believability. Policky (pronounced “Po lis kee”) has been painting and selling his art since before he was a teenager. He is a self-taught artist and paints in oil, and also creates bronze sculpture.

Oil by J.F. Policky.
It is the second painting in the Collectors Series

He paints a wide range of subject matter, gleaned from his travels and a life full of many experiences. Subjects he has painted include horses, Indians, boats, cattle, buffalo, wildlife and landscapes. Policky grew up in the ranchland of western Nebraska, but left home at sixteen to work in the oil fields in winter and rodeo in the summer. He found his way back to Nebraska where he concentrates on his fine art.

Policky was the featured artist of the year at the 2004 Reno Rodeo. The Reno Rodeo had a huge turnout and Policky’s original of the Reno rodeo poster sold in the first few hours.

A new series of large paintings titled The Collectors Choice Series is in progress. The first in the series of eight paintings is Into the Wind, then Butterflies, and the third is All Juiced Up. All three depict wild horses, free of saddles or bridles, out in the elements. These works are much larger, nearly 5 feet by 4 feet in size, and more detailed. He also is reproducing them as large giclée prints at his own publishing company, Horsehead Productions in Lisco, Nebraska.
