    Mindy Colton Expressive Impressionism

The sculpture of Mindy Zimmerman Colton has been described as expressive impressionism, earthy and sometimes edgy. In much of her work she uses the horse as a symbol or metaphor for a feeling, idea or concept. The horses are usually involved in some action or expression.

“Creating in bronze and other solid materials allows me to explore design and form in a permanent medium. Choosing to let the medium show through is as important as the image itself. In striving to achieve an expressionistic, almost abstract figurative or symbolic work, I want viewers to see and feel the texture, energy and movement with their eyes as they would if they touched the piece,” states Colton.

In 2003, Colton was awarded a grant from United Arts of Central Florida to create outdoor sculpture. Lyric, a life-size contemporary equine sculpture made of copper, was auctioned in an exclusive fundraiser in Ocala, Florida, to benefit the 2004 United States Equestrian Team Olympic effort.

Colton will be exhibiting her works in a number of shows this spring in central Florida. She is invited by the Crealdé School of Art, Winter Park, Florida, to represent them with a large outdoor sculpture at the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival Sculpture Show in April, 2005. Hundreds of thousands of people will see her work at Epcot. After the Epcot show, the piece will be installed on loan at the Harmony, Florida, Outdoor Sculpture Garden.

From March 17 - May 29, 2005, Colton’s sculpture will be in a group show: Art in Three Dimensions, Eight Florida Women Sculptors in the City of Orlando, in Orlando, Florida. At the Deland Museum of Art, Deland, Florida, her works will be in the Florida equine invitational art exhibit Everything Equine – Equus: Horses in Art opening April 29, and continuing through July 3, 2005.
