    Editor's Notes - by Sarah H. Crampton

There are signs the world of equine art is gaining momentum. Equine Vision Magazine - Art for the Horse Lover sponsored the 2002 Western States Horse Expo Equine Art Exhibit that displayed artwork by over eighty artists. The number of originals on display and exhibit sales doubled from last year. One of the judges of the art exhibit, gallery owner Chris Lentz, was so overwhelmed by the quality of equine art on display, she has decided her Lentz Gallery in the Sacramento area will specialize in art with equestrian themes.

There are other signs of the equine art world's momentum. The Black Stallion Exhibit held in Ocala, Florida, to benefit a Literacy Program will be touring other cities across the United States. A new gallery in Colorado, The Wild Life Experience, is planning to open with an equine art exhibit. In The Los Angeles Times, staff writer Christopher Reynolds included comments about the Cattlemen's Western Art Show and Sale in Paso Robles. He observed that despite the New York art critics opinion, or the reluctance of investors to purchase American art created after the 1950s, the sales for western art are soaring. He mentioned that one out of every four purchases at the Cattlemen's show were made by first-time buyers. This is great news for those of us who are committed to expanding the market.

Outside of the horse world, the general public also seems to be drawn to the image of the horse like a magnet. Indicators of the appeal of the horse this year alone include the successful summer film, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and the book about the famous race horse Seabiscuit climbed to the top of the New York Times Best Seller's list. To fill the public demand for horse sense ideology, Monty Roberts will soon release his fourth book, From My Hands to Yours.

The positive imagery of the horse is recognized inside and outside the horse world. Its appeal is universal. To quote artist Judy Vargas, "The horse is the real work of art."

    Enjoy!
