As a child, Phyllis Waltman created paper horses instead of playing with paper dolls. She recollects one of the paper horses stood by itself from all the crayola she used on it. Whenever it lost its shine on went another layer. For a long time Waltman worked in pencil, exploring and pushing for strong contrast in her drawing. After deciding to add color to her artwork, and not knowing which medium to attempt, she enrolled in an art class with an instructor who taught in all mediums. She was the only student in the class, and the instructor started with acrylic. Phyllis has stayed with acrylics and spends time exploring color and technique in an effort to improve her skills further with each painting. Her work is being considered as promotional material for the 2004 Equine Affaire. Phyllis is drawn to horses in harness. Exploring in detail all the intricacies of the harness and having the actual harnesses on hand aided her with paintings such as "Majestic Belgians". Waltman favors close-up studies of horses alone or in groups. She often utilizes a dark minimal background and a focused spotlight on the horses. The dynamics of horse behavior, their communication and reactions in different settings are a constant fascination. |
