Elena Nevado - Conveying Energy

by Lea Rakeli

The paintings of Elena Nevado move beyond conventional use of space, color, and form. She has in part abandoned traditional colors and employs rich crimsons, ultramarine blues, and chrome yellows with a forthrightness that conveys energy and draws attention to the elements in the composition.

Nevado comments, "The colors, the shapes and forms in a painting will guide me."

Elena Nevado has had a longing for the American culture since she was ten years old and lived in the north of Sweden. When she watched the western movies she cried every time they killed a Native American. She has visited the United States on and off for many years and in 1998 realized her heart still belonged with the Native Americans.

Nevado came to the states in the year 2000 and stayed at a friends ranch in Borrego Springs, California. There the first warrior painting was made. From there she traveled to Spain and began painting classes with Alexis, a well-known Spanish artist.

Elena divides her time painting in Spain and the United States and her work is being displayed in New Mexico and California. Elena relates, "The gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, belongs to a Native American and he told me that I have been painting his face, which is not really possible because I did not know him when I did those paintings."

Nevado comments, "In Europe I have sold the most paintings in Sweden but also some in Spain. Sweden has a lot of interest in the American culture.

"The deserts of the southwest have inspired me so much," she continues. "I love California, Arizona and New Mexico. I feel like having wings when I drive around in the beautiful surroundings of America and I am still discovering it day by day."

In the future Elena plans to paint mostly horses and animals. She is also planning a series that will concentrate more on Spanish history.

Elena Nevado is represented by the Borrego Art Institute in Borrego Springs, California, and the Eddie Griffith Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
