Cover Contest Results - 2006 Horses in Art
The cover contest judges were Roy and Barb Wieghorst, and Silver Creek Fine Art gallery owner Lynn Endicott. Roy is the son of western painter Olaf Wieghorst and is often asked to lecture on the topic of western art. Lynn Endicott has been immersed in the art world with her gallery for over 25 years. Reading their comments about the art also shows they are no strangers to horses. We share with you a few comments from our judges: Shower Stall by Michelle Grant: “The atmosphere, textures and feeling of being right there are conveyed in this engaging oil by Michelle Grant. No need to explain the story of the painting, it’s all there. The cold morning, steam rising off the sweating harness horse after a workout as it’s hosed off, harness being hung and put away, the scene unfolds beautifully with Grant’s brush work.”
Moro by Maria Evangelina Rodriguez: “Of all the pieces of art that we looked at, this piece was one of the most dynamic and intriguing. The artist’s use of color as well as drawing technique resulted in the composition that is both visually enjoyable and interesting. The looseness of the painting style adds to the appeal of this piece.” Gala by Christina Botzel “This painting portrays the Andalusian horse in all their strength and beauty. Being a watercolor, it demonstrates the artist’s mastery of this medium. Andalusians are a noble and docile blend of agile movements, beauty, and talent. This Andalusian shows the harmonious movements notorius to the breed with or without the rider.” Places to go, Promises to Keep by Stacy Maeda “Love the power portrayed in this horse. This stunning image could have been called freedom. Nothing is more beautiful and exhilarating than to watch a horse running free. Stacy truly captured the grace and power of this horse on a mission – you’d best get out of his way!”
June 9th in the Black Hills… by Bob Coronato “Bob managed to capture this very cold working day, so cold the cowboys have to stop and pick up the calves. Love that horse that stands while you are off, trying to get your job done.” Cherokee by Elizabeth Robinson “The artist’s selection of a horse galloping in the snow adds greatly to this piece’s appeal. Using the medium of pastel makes this even more pleasurable to the eye.” Cover Contest Winners
