Donna Binfield Bridges the Gap

by Sarah H. Crampton

"The Ghost Paint" – Watercolor, 18 x 24, by Donna Binfield. “Sometimes when I paint with watercolor especially, I just play around with it. Lots of water and tipping the paper gives me some cool patterns to work with. Since I try to see horses in almost everything, I came up with this painting. I hope to do more along these lines in the future.”

“While watching a beautiful horse in action, I can actually become so emotional that tears come to my eyes. To me, they are the ultimate in beauty and grace,” states Nebraska artist Donna Binfield. Born and raised in Nebraska’s rural farming area, surrounded by birds and animals, she drew and painted the world around her. Soon after high school she bought herself her first horse, named Major, and still dreams about him.

Reflecting back Binfield comments, “In my earlier days, I was rather timid, and art gave me a way to express how I felt about such things, using my pencil and brush to do so. Then stepping back out of the picture, I let my painting speak for me. It seemed much easier that way.”

Today, Donna lives not far from where she grew up. A rural studio near Hastings, Nebraska, is a very comfortable setting for an artist, where she resides with her husband, various dogs, cats, and horses. She works in most media – pastel, oil, acrylic, watercolor, monoprinting, and sculpture – and teaches classes and workshops throughout Nebraska and Kansas.

A lifetime outdoors has kept her in close contact with nature, and part of her passion for painting has been inspired by her desire to share a piece of nature with the viewer. Binfield explains, “I have experimented with every painting media imaginable, but my quest was always the same – to express myself with my paintings. Along the way, I began discovering that they were doing just that, and I was making connections with people who felt as I did about horses and other subjects. My paintings bridged the gap between me and my viewers.”

“I am continually inspired by the beautiful works that other artists have done, and I have met so many true and exciting friends through my journey,” continues Donna. “What more could a timid country girl have asked for? I thank God for art and artists and for giving us beautiful subject matter that never ends.”
