Dee Dee Murry - Elements Converge

by Sarah H. Crampton

Splash Dance – Acrylic, 12 x16, by Dee Dee Murry, Summer 2008 cover image.

What inspires cover artist Dee Dee Murry when creating an idea for a painting is beautiful horses in a scenic background. Murry explains, "It’s a moment in time captured when all of the elements come together for a split second. The lighting is just right, there’s a certain look in the horse’s eye, the mane and tail blowing in a beautiful shape. Something we’d all like to see and it could happen, but we rarely, if ever, get the opportunity to witness it. I like to push this frozen-moment concept, but not to the point of crossing over into fantasy. I want to keep it believable."

This summer’s cover image, the acrylic painting Splash Dance is a great example of Dee Dee Murry portraying such a wonderful moment. The Horses in Art cover contest judge commented, “Splash Dance is a delightful and convincing depiction of wildness. The cool blues and grays of the ocean and sky, offset by the deep browns of the horse give this image warmth and clarity. Though integral to her subject matter – seagulls, frothy white waves, the spray kicked up by her galloping steed – the artist makes superb use of white. It hints of light on the horizon, lends a subtle glow to the seagulls and gives structure and luminescence to the expanse of sea from background to foreground.”

Since she works in fine detail, she paints mainly with acrylics on smooth board but also is fond of oil, watercolor and graphite. Her art is owned by clients worldwide, and she is in demand for commissioned portraiture.

Dee Dee Murry has always been an animal lover. She grew up riding and showing two Morab horses and even earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for riding a horse the longest in an equestrian marathon. She is also a dog fancier and has owned and shown several dogs to awards in obedience. Not surprisingly, her preferred art subjects are horses, dogs, cats and wildlife.
