Modern-Day Renaissance Man by Courtney Ferguson
"When it comes to learning about horses, I'm insatiable," Marty admits. "To me, every horse has dignity and beauty. As a horseman, I want to learn. As an artist, I want to capture that dignity and beauty." His award-winning work is a testimony to both his talent and his versatility. Look around his home, and you're treated to a gallimaufry of paintings and drawings. You'll see competition horses, everyday horses, ponies, dogs, wolves and cats. You'll also see the people who love them - Native Americans, cowboys, aristocrats and children share equal wall space. However, sharing space is where the similarities stop. Each is a unique tribute on canvas or paper. Each offers insight into what makes the subject special. Marty's affinity with horses began in New York City, where he came to know and respect the horses that delivered milk, ice and fresh vegetables in his neighborhood. After learning the farrier trade, Marty worked with many breeds and acquired an interest in driving. Years later, still fascinated by the beauty and soul of the horse, he and his wife, Jean, opened a training and conditioning stable on a farm with a charming, Victorian house in Northern California. Now retired, he has the opportunity to present the individual characters of these magnificent creatures on canvas. Martin Bettin received 1st and 3rd place in the Pastel division at the juried show, Art at the Classic held in conjunction with the Draft Horse Classic in Grass Valley, California, September 16 - 19, 2004. He was rewarded this year with above average sales and commissions and found that to be true with a majority of the other artists attending. |
