As we approach the end of yet another year and take stock of that incredibly short period of time, we look at what we have achieved and very often (for good reason) we think in monetary terms. Yet it is important to acknowledge the value of endeavors that can't be measured in dollars and cents.
Recently I took a painting class and completed an oil painting. The time spent painting was far more invigorating than I expected. But it's only my third painting. No expectations for greatness. Knowing that allowed me to enjoy the process.
Watch children when they decide to tackle a project. They get all excited thinking about what they are going to make, how they will make it, then after gathering together the materials, they just dive in. They sing, laugh when they drop things on the floor, completely uncaring and yet totally confident it will turn out just fine. What courage! Clearly, the process is where all the fun is.
It is somewhat like the benefits reaped from good old manual labor. It is the happiness, the contentment, to just do the thing. No one will know or care how perfectly you raked the ground in front of the barn, but a quick glance at the beauty of the tidiness, the effort expended to finish the job is quite enough to bring on that feeling of satisfaction.
As we strive every year to improve our lives and the world around us, let's not forget to celebrate the world as it is, what we already have. At Christmas this year I wish you all the joy of sharing with friends and family on that day, confident it will all turn out just fine. And there was a reason for all that raking, after all.
Enjoy!
